The Tamarindus Indica has been grown all over the world for centuries, for its tangy, sweet fruit, Tamarind. However, it also makes for an amazing houseplant.
Indigenous to Madagascar, this plant (the only one of its genus) grows from delicate woody stems, producing symmetrical feathery leaves, blue green in colour. New growth comes out a bright lime green. Indoors, it can grow up to 2 metres, but is easy to cut back if you're wanting to control its height.
We recommend placing the Tamarindus in a sunny spot where it will receive at least a couple hours of direct sun a day. They are tolerant of dry air, but to honour it's natural climate, we recommend humidity of at least 50% for this plant (but refrain from misting, as this can damage the leaves). Repot every 2 years in a fine, well-draining mix and water when top inch or two of soil is dry. Keep this plant warm all year round as they are very sensitive to cold.
We adore this plant for its growth style and structure. It makes for a great statement plant whilst still being delicate. The colour of its leaves are a soothing green that pair beautifully with black and earthy toned pots. It is also a great plant to use for Kokedama due to its sculptural qualities. We recommend this plant for those looking for something leafy to fill their sunny windowsill, who appreciates something sculptural and different. We wouldn't recommend this plant to someone with a cold home.
We have not added this plant to our list of pet safe plants, as it is considered highly toxic to dogs. It is only considered mildly toxic to cats if a lot of the plant is ingested.
