Salvia microphylla Hot Lips, commonly known as Hot Lips sage, is a striking, semi-evergreen perennial shrub known for its vibrant, bicolor flowers and aromatic foliage. Growing to a height and spread of about 2–3 feet (60–90 cm), this compact and bushy plant features small, ovate, dark green leaves with a pleasant, fruity fragrance when crushed. From late spring through fall, Salvia microphylla Hot Lips produces an abundance of tubular flowers that are uniquely two-toned, with a bright red upper portion and a crisp white lower lip. In warmer temperatures, the flowers may appear entirely red or white, adding seasonal variation to the display. This drought-tolerant and pollinator-friendly plant thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, making it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, and containers. Highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, it provides long-lasting color and movement in the garden while requiring minimal maintenance. Zones 7-10
Germination
To germinate Salvia microphylla seeds, start by sowing them in a well-draining seed-starting mix, such as a blend of peat, perlite, and sand. Lightly press the seeds onto the surface of the soil without covering them completely, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting gently. Place the seed tray in a warm location with bright, indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature of 18–22°C (65–72°F) for optimal germination. The seeds typically sprout within 7–21 days. Once the seedlings develop their first set of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots with similar well-draining soil. Gradually acclimate the young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in a sunny location with good air circulation. Salvia microphylla is drought-tolerant once established and thrives in gardens, borders, and containers, attracting pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
