GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Coleus is an exceptionally unique plant that is cultivated outdoors and indoors. It displays symmetrical, multi-coloured leaves of varying sizes and shapes. Coleus does produce small flowers, but these are usually discarded to conserve energy for the decorative leaves. Although they’re tender tropical plants, coleus will grow well as an annual in a variety of places. The brilliant colours can add a touch of pizzazz to garden beds, landscapes, window boxes, containers and hanging baskets.

Just beware of coleus’ toxicity to pets.

Start seeds indoors eight to ten weeks before the last frost date. Have patience because seeds may take up to 21 days to germinate. But once sprouted, with a month of warm weather, young coleus can transform into a fully developed plant. Scatter seeds thinly over a flat filled with potting soil and cover lightly. Mist the soil well and cover the flat with plastic wrap to trap heat and moisture. Place the tray in a warm and bright spot and remove the plastic when seeds germinate.

Transplant seedlings into their own pots when they have two sets of true leaves. Keep them well-watered and under bright light until all danger of frost has passed. Give young coleus plants a period of hardening off to prepare for transplanting outdoors. Temperatures should reach and remain above 16 degrees before permanently moving the plants outside.

Coleus will do best in part-shade to full-shade. Abundant sunshine can burn leaves and fade colours. Filtered sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon is the ideal scenario. Coleus kept as houseplants get requisite light from indirect sunshine, but will need some direct sunlight during winter months.

To keep coleus happy and thriving all year long, plant it in loose, rich, well-drained soil that’s been amended with compost. Soil should stay moist but allowed to dry out a bit between waterings.

Coleus can be pruned to promote full, stocky plants. Pinch out the stalks below the flower buds when plants are about 15 cm tall. Coleus will thrive in hot and humid conditions and any touch of frost will kill it off. Bring plants inside or cover them on cold nights when temperatures drop to 10 degrees or lower. Cuttings for propagation can be taken from plants before winter rolls around. No matter how you grow your coleus, they’re certain to brighten up any space they occupy.

QUICK FACTS

- Coleus was named by the botanist Karl Ludwig Blume in the mid-1800s, after finding coleus cultivated in the Dutch colony of Java, an island of today’s Indonesia.

- Coleus seeds will remain viable for 2 years if stored in a cool, dark place, ideally between 4 and 10⁰C. After that, the germination rate may start to go down.

Multi function for my skin and it’s issues
I’m always looking for a clean sun block and I know zinc it the best ingredient so I’m always looking for zinc sticks. I liked this one because it has a much shorter ingredient list than most and they are fairly decent ingredients that are in it. While this is good for the face and body spot treatments I’ve found it’s been useful for some of my skin issues. One, I’ve found it’s very moisturizing, it’s been helpful in some of my eczema flare ups on my hands, where other products helped on other areas of my body this for some reason was the only thing to make a difference on my hands for these dry red spots on the top of my hands as well as the blisters I get on my palm them then become broken raw skin. I just re ordered a stick due to running out using it this way. It also helps to act as a barrier against water when I shower for some of the spots that getting wet irritates further. I originally wanted my next stick to be the even cleaner brand Badger but due to how it’s been helping my skin outside of the sunblock use, I didn’t want to risk changing to a different recipe and have it not work the same so I’ve stuck to this one. It’s convenient as a stick too so I’m able to apply it quickly without have to get it all over my hands as well.

My favorite take everywhere sunscreen not just for babies or kids
This is my new go to sunscreen and I am a grown woman in my 60s. I love that it truly is pure and simple! It does go on a little white but it can be rubbed in and I kinda like that it makes my face slightly lighter and brighter while at the same time keeping it properly covered and protected without any of the added harmful stuff that other sunscreens include in their ingredients. I also really enjoy that this is a small compact easy to apply stick that I can put in my pocket or in the zipper of my purse.

Great Sunscreen, But Size and Application Could Be Better
I’ve been looking for a baby sunscreen with clean ingredients, and this one is fantastic in that regard! It’s gentle on my baby’s sensitive skin and provides great protection against the sun. I love knowing that it’s free from harsh chemicals, and it gives me peace of mind every time we head outdoors. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the size and the application. The bottle is smaller than I expected, so I go through it pretty quickly with my active little one. Also, the sunscreen is a bit thick and doesn’t go on as smoothly as I’d like—it takes a little more effort to rub in evenly, especially on squirmy babies! Overall, though, it’s a solid product, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a clean, safe sunscreen for their baby. Just wish it came in a bigger size and was a bit easier to apply!

Florida resident and I LOVE THIS... for kids too! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Honest review here. We live in Florida so I have tried a lot of sunscreens and this is my new favorite stick... HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It goes on smoothly and is a thin but white formula. So it shows up and blocks sun but it isn't so thick that it is annoying. Our family spends a lot of time at the beach and outside in the sun. Sun protection is something we take very seriously. I always require SPF 50 and I like a solid block that has Zinc Oxide. So that limits my choices b/c it has to have 50 plus the ZO. I love that this is hypoallegenic (b/c some of them can contain toxic materials that are highly allergic especially for children). My favorite feature is that it is PABA, phthalates, fragrances, parabens, dyes, alcohol and oxybenzone. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Convenient non-toxic option
Exactly what I was looking for. Non-toxic convenient option for sunblock. I keep one in my purse, our outdoor bag and in the car. Rubs in easy no weirdness. We are light complected so I'm not sure if it would leave white cast on a darker skin tone. I use it daily on my face, ears and hands.
