Bring a touch of the tropics into your home with the Nematanthus 'Brazilian Firecracker'. Known for its glossy, waxy foliage and peculiar, pouch-shaped flowers, this trailing beauty is a standout member of the Gesneriad family (a relative of the African Violet). Whether it’s cascading from a hanging basket or brightening up a bookshelf, its unique texture and "exploding" blooms make it a conversation starter.
Native to the rainforests of Brazil, where it typically grows as an epiphyte (on trees) in humid, shaded environments.
What truly sets this plant apart are its flowers. The blooms are bright orange-red with yellow tips, resembling Candy Corn or a tiny Goldfish. Unlike typical flat-petaled flowers, these are fused into a "pouched" shape with a small opening at the end, designed in nature to be pollinated by hummingbirds.
-
Bright, indirect light. It loves a sunny window but avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the waxy leaves.
Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering. It is drought-tolerant due to its thick leaves but dislikes "wet feet."
A well-draining, airy mix. Use a potting soil amended with perlite or orchid bark to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.
Ideal range is 18°C – 27°C (65°F - 80°F). Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
This plant should be fertilized once during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Non-toxic! It is generally considered pet-safe (cats/dogs) and human-safe.
-
Zones 10–11. In cooler climates, it must be kept indoors or treated as a patio plant in summer.
